Threshold
Like glass, the threshold itself, though not a material medium, nevertheless has that combination of porosity and resistance that creates pressures between which the imagination thrives - Subja Mukherji
Threshold brings together a series of paintings, which focus on moments of uncertainty - seeing, approaching, or passing through boundaries into other realms. By paying attention to the portal itself, I bring to light physical and mental structures that often go unnoticed. In painting the moment a hand opens a gate, I pause that special moment of balancing on the threshold, holding space for the anticipation and anxiety that accompany ideas of the unknown on the other side.
I am drawn to barriers because the transition from grieving an old idea to discovering a new one is a vulnerable and generative place. These moments of in-betweenness are at the core of my creative process. By pausing there, I hope to honour uncertainty as a site for the emergence of new paths and modes of thinking.
Threshold is on exhibition at Xchanges Gallery, March 7-22.
